I recently reviewed their beautifully remastered reissue of Bill Wither's 1971 debut LP "Just As I Am" with "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Grandma's Hands" on it - and I thought it couldn't get any better. This is an amazing album from an artist who should have been as big as any R&B superstar of the 70's.Īs a voracious collector of old-skool Soul and Funk (and reviewer of the same) - I've been singing the praises of England's BIG BREAK RECORDS for some time now. He turns a simple ballad like Elton John s 'Your Song' into a soulful, breath-taking, up-tempo masterpiece. His vocal sounds just seem to flow out of him. He uses his voice like Miles Davis used a trumpet. Some of the songs of the album reflect the 'message soul' that was popular in the early 70 s, namely 'Brown Baby', 'I m Just a Prisoner' & 'Am I Black Enough for You.' In this masterpiece Billy Paul demonstrates that he is more than a singer he s an amazing interpreter. This was the first Billy Paul s album for Philadelphia International and it was straight club jazz. Jones' and its follow-up 'Am I Black Enough for You?' which reached number 29 on the soul chart and number 79 on the pop chart.
